Mike Flanagan, best known for his adaptations of Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, has confirmed that his upcoming Dark Tower series will remain as faithful to the original books as possible.
It has also been revealed that King himself has joined the project.
During a panel at IGN Fan Fest 2025, the writer answered a question about whether he would be interested in adding new material to the adaptation, as he did in the 2020 miniseries The Stand.
The Dark Tower is one of King’s most ambitious and personal projects. The writer began work on the first book, The Gunslinger, back in 1970, and the story has gradually tied together much of his work. Details of his involvement in the new series remain unknown, but given Flanagan’s promises to faithfully bring the original to the screen, we can expect the author’s contribution to be significant.
The director has previously said that the key to a successful adaptation is not trying to turn The Dark Tower into Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, but to preserve its originality. According to him, it is “the story of a small group of people who are given impossible tasks and how they come together.” The exact release date of the series is not yet known, but Flanagan has many King projects in the works: his film Life of Chuck will hit theaters in May, and he is also working on a Carrie series for Amazon.
